Nuestros Ninos Pre School
|
|
After the federal law requiring all
school age children with or without disabilities to attend school in the mid 1970's.
Douglas ARC found itself in a unique situation where it was receiving referrals for preschool age children.
To meet the need Douglas ARC opened the Nuestros Ninos Preschool. The Nuestros Ninos Preschool provides services
to children starting almost at birth to 3 years of age. |

At 3 years of age the Douglas Public Schools admits them into
their Prea-kindergarten School program. The idea behind Nuestros Ninos is early intervention. Speech pathologists, physical
therapists and occupational therapists work with the
children and their families every week.

It is so important to work with these kids today,
because with a baby you can never get back yesterday. One of the goals is to get the kids into regular school, not special education. Limitations are not put on the kids, just expectations.
Nuestros Ninos staff works with kids either in Preschool or in a natural setting. This setting can
be either the home, park playground or the public library. The parents need to know the staff is here for them also.

The preschool can be a place to leave a child for an hour or
so while mother gets some time herself. The preschool is a much-needed break after caring for a child with a
disability for 22 hours a day.
It is important to know that Mental Retardation is not an illness; it's a way of life. Once everyone understands
this, life for all becomes much easier.
