Personal Living Skills
|
|
|
Over time Douglas ARC has taken a holistic approach to working with our people. Our people
need not only a place to learn and work, but they also need a place to live. Douglas ARC has expanded its
teaching program to include Personal Living Skills. The purpose of this program is to give people the chance to live on their own with minimum support.
Douglas ARC has staff that comes into the person's home for a hour or two each day and teach living skills such as cooking, cleaning,
laundry, paying bills, shopping, even how to go out and be a part of the community such as eating out, or volunteering at the church or whatever the individual wants in order to be a valuable and contributing member of our community.
For most people this is their first taste of living independently without someone with them 24 hours a day.
Giving people more control over their life is what it is all about. Once a staff leaves in the early evening the person decides how they want to spend their
free time.
Decisions, decisions, should I watch TV, go to the park, see a movie, or hang out with my friends?
